Aim for the Highest

English

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.

An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:

  • English Advanced
  • English as an Alternative Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
  • English Extension 1
  • English Extension 2
  • English Life Skills
  • English Standard
  • English Studies.

Developing proficiency in English will enable students to communicate confidently, think critically and imaginatively, work collaboratively, reflect on their learning and become lifelong learners and informed, active participants in society. The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging as well as enjoyable.

Our Year 7 –12 programs have been devised to engage students with an array of texts and learning experiences that include the study of quality literature from past and contemporary societies, Australian literature, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and perspectives, Asian cultures and Shakespearean drama. In addition to this, students will examine texts that explore a variety of intercultural, social and gender perspectives, and that provide insight into popular and youth cultures and environmental and social sustainability.

The English staff is dedicated to providing students with engaging learning experiences using a variety of delivery methods. We hold high expectations that all students will complete homework and assessment tasks assigned to them to the best of their ability.

Extra-curricular activities

Our Faculty encourages students to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities including debating, public speaking, writing, poetry and ICAS English competitions. Students are also encouraged to attend live performances, lectures and workshops.

English is a subject that fosters students' understanding of themselves and their world. All students at Camden Haven High School are urged to 'aim for the highest', preparing them for lives as successful global citizens.
