Aim for the Highest

2018 HSC Results

Thirteen years of schooling came to a crashing halt for year 12 students as they impatiently sat by their computer awaiting their ATAR results.

“I had alarm set, I definitely wanted to see it as soon as I could,” said distinguished achiever Amber Nicholas.

There were a total of 11 students from Camden Haven High School on the Honour Roll this year and the school was ranked 235 in the state by the Sydney Morning Herald, making it the highest ranked public school in the Mid North Coast.

The ranking does not take into account the many single-course distance education students that attend Camden Haven High School, many of whom attend private schools in the area.

Five students at Camden Haven High School achieved ATARs over 90, with three coming close over 89. Of the 301 individual subject HSC marks this year, 65% of the marks were between 70-89 (Bands 4-5) and 71% of them were 70 (Band 4) or above.

Storm Davidson, set to be the Dux of Camden Haven High School, said she was shocked at her results.

“I opened it and literally screamed,” Storm said.

“It was higher than I expected, I was aiming for 85!” she said.

“I’m not going to uni, I think it’s pretty ironic. The aim is to have my own business as a health coach,” the distinguished achiever said.

Storm will study an Advanced Certificate of Health Coaching online through Caden Health and is currently working six days a week at Adrenaline Fitness.

The graduate said it was hard to balance but enjoyed Year 12, more than anything learning the skills to make her future successful like time management, discipline and work-life balance.

“By the end I loved all my subjects and all my teachers, so I enjoyed going to class,” Storm said.

Mr Rob Lyttle, Deputy Principal of senior students, said the class of 2018 have done themselves and the school proud before the results came out.

“Storm’s results prove that hard work combined with choosing the subjects you enjoy are key to achieving success in the HSC,” said Rob.

The students would not have found such success without the commitment of their teachers and year advisor Mr Ben Sainsbury, as well as Learning Edge mentors Ms Liz Neville and Mrs Karen Young.

“Sainsbury has been the best year advisor, if we didn’t have him it would be a different story. He’s supportive but funny and keeps it real and keeps us motivated. He’s one of us!” Storm said.

“I find them admirable and inspiring, they’re so hard working and highly diligent,” said Ben Sainsbury, Year 12 Advisor.

“They deserve nothing but the best things in this world. I’m a super proud school dad!” he said.

High achiever Amber Nicholas will move to Melbourne next year to study Biomedicine, after achieving a 91 in Biology and 93 in Visual arts, giving her an ATAR of 94.65. She enjoyed the balance of both art and science, and considered a career in both.

“There are better job opportunities and I can make better contributions in science. I will still do art though,” she said.

“Mr Sainsbury, Ms Neville and Mrs Young were always there to help [during the HSC],” said Amber.

“I would like to acknowledge the work of our teaching staff who continue to improve the learning outcomes of all our senior students,” said Mr Rob Lyttle, Deputy Principal for senior students.

“It was the passion and professionalism of Ms Neville and Mrs Young from the Learning Edge team, whose years of support has helped to raise the bar to these new highs,” he said.

Mrs Margaret Hutchinson, Principal, said the school is very proud of the results.

“Our HSC results have been outstanding. This is a testament to the quality education that myself and the teaching staff are able to provide for students,” she said.

The school would like to congratulate all students on their hard work and effort over Year 12 and wish them all the best for the future with the hope they will come back to visit!
