Clean Up Day for Geography Students

Students from Year 10 have participated in Clean Up Australia Day for 12 consecutive years.

The day is incorporated as part of the Geography excursion to Lake Cathie reserve in line with the Environmental Education Program.

“It’s great we are doing this activity as we should all take more care of our environment,” said Year 10 student Hayley.

Students collected rubbish in Lake Cathie and studied the fragile environment that displays dune erosion and weed eradication.

“Students worked hard all day and teachers appreciated the positive attitude displayed by everyone,” said Darren Mearrick, Head Teacher Social Science.

The excursion saw students discuss the masterplan put forward by Council and why it is important for residents to have input in protecting the road and 17 threatened houses.

After a BBQ lunch, students walked to Illaroo Road to study the sand dune erosion and the importance of vegetation to prevent damage.

As part of the Geography assessment task, students will go on to write an essay on management issues and the perspective stakeholders have on the issues.
