Year 11 Biology

Year 11 Biology Students have this term been sinking their teeth into the first module of their course about cell structure and function.

Practical experiments form a vital part of their studies, helping to visualise key concepts as well as learn valuable skills in experimentation.

Here, students Rhys, Fletcher, Chase, Shae and Emma prepared dialysis bags containing starch solution to simulate a cell. This was then suspended into a jar of iodine solution to show the movement of different size solutes through the membrane by diffusion. A simple colour change was enough to show that while iodine was small enough to pass into the bag, starch was too large to get out!

Currently working on enzymes, Year 11 Biology is about to complete their first Assessment task of the course before moving on to their second module of 4 this year.
