Students Compete in Science and Engineering Challenge

Our students recently competed in the local Science and Engineering Challenge. Year 9 student wrote a wrap up of the event:

On Tuesday the 21st of May, 26 students left for Kempsey High School for the annual Science and Engineering challenge. The students split off into groups of three or four to complete tasks that were set up over the school. These tasks included things like Confounding Communications, that required a team to design a code to send through fibre optic cables, Grasping Straws, where students had to build a 'bionic hand', and the bridge building contest (which is exactly what it sounds like).

Some of these tasks proved to be very challenging and required lots of creativity. The Helter Skelter Shelter, for example, required students to design a structure out of paper, straws and masking tape that could withstand 'seismic' activity while weights were placed on a foam plate that sat at the top of the structure. Points were awarded for height of the structure and number of weights that could be held.

The points from all activities were gathered and after the morning activities, Camden Haven was in first place. However, by the afternoon, we had dropped to fourth place, and went home with plans to improve for next year.

It's fair to say the day wasn't a complete failure, however. The boys who journeyed in Mr Rabie's car got Maccas for morning tea and those of us who took the bus enjoys a very loud karaoke of/ Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys. So really, who's the real winner here?
