Each year a group of enthusiastic Enterprise students participate in the Rural Fire Service Cadets Program, this year our group marking the 10,000th volunteer!

A group of 21 enthusiastic Rural Fire Service (RFS) Cadets from Camden Haven High School has marked the 10,000th volunteer in the program since its inception in 2004.

Each year Enterprise students don the bright yellow uniforms, hard hats, and goggles to partake in a comprehensive week of RFS fundamentals.

“We always acknowledge students who aim for the highest at school and these students have shown tremendous effort and commitment,” said Principal Margaret Hutchinson.

“Cadets is the highlight of my year,” said Mid Coast District Officer Kristy Channon.

A special graduation was held at the conclusion of the program with demonstrations for special guests Mayor Peta Pinson, Principal Margaret Hutchinson, State Youth Development Officer Paul Cunningham, Mid Coast District Officer Kristy Channon, and District Manager Superintendent Kam Baker.

“It was wonderful to see the skills they learned, and the value that will add to our community” said Mayor Peta Pinson.

“I can’t thank the school enough for their commitment to the program and for its continued effort. It’s fantastic to see,” said Superintendent Kam Baker.

Camden Haven RFS Captain Ron Morris said the cadet program teaches students essential skills and gives them a taster for RFS volunteering.

“They get a good idea of what we’re about and some of them go on to join the RFS,” said the captain.

“We need plenty more members!” said Captain Ron Morris.

NSW RFS Youth Development Officer Paul Cunningham says there is a good rapport between the cadets and the volunteers running the program and hopes this will encourage more young volunteers.

The school would like to thank the volunteers for conducting the program, the special guests of the graduation, and the students for showing such dedication to their cadetship.
