On Wed 30th Nov a big bus load of CHHS students played friendly basketball games in Port Macquarie against Wauchope and Melville High Schools and the Hastings College Port Campus. Games involved 3 groups: U15 Boys and Girls as well as Open Boys. Our CHHS teams had some wins and loses but the event wasn't an official competition.
The NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) knock out competition is the only event for each age division in the school year. If any school team is knocked out of the CHS comp that means they've had their ONE and ONLY day of planned competition. The key concepts of the Wednesday friendly event were inclusivity, skill development and fun.
The U15 Girls and Boys all honed their awareness of the rules and finer aspects of how the game can be played. The more experienced Open Boys players got to test their agility, strength and skills against fit and talented players from the other schools. This event was the last hurrah for three Year 10 students who are leaving CHHS, that have been great assets to CHHS basketball recently: Finn B, Alex P and Swift H.
Mr Roberts from CHHS convened the day and had an awesome support crew including Mr O'Keefe, Miss Border, SLSO's Chad Emerton and Cary Halbert plus two superstar score bench student workers Shane Thurtell and Tyler Shaw. Some senior boys and staff from other schools chipped in to help referee games as well. Special thanks also goes to SLSO James "Jimmy" Hinchcliffe for his help training boys through the year and preparation for this event which he could unfortunately not attend. Thanks also to Robyn Jennings and Miss Border for taking photos on the day.
In Term 1, 2023, our Opens Boys and Girls will compete in the NSW CHS knockout round for our Lower North Coast Zone in Port Macquarie. If any boys or girls, from Yr7-12 are interested in joining any basketball skills sessions at school and/or want to learn about opportunities to play in a social basketball competition, chat with Mr Roberts, Mr O'Keefe, Mr Hinchcliffe, Ms Border or PDHPE staff and we'll definitely try to help you out.
